Lyman continuum as a diagnostic for nonthermal processes in solar flares
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have computed the Lyman continuum intensities for different flare circumstances, namely, the temperature rise in the chromosphere, the downward shift of the transition region, and the nonthermal effect of a precipitating beam of electrons. All the three factors can enhance the intensity by various amounts. The third effect additionally lowers the color temperature of the Lyman continuum. It thus provides a diagnostic tool to discriminate whether there exists an obvious nonthermal effect of electron beam bombardment during solar flares. It is also suggested that the relative magnitudes of Lyman and Balmer continuumenhancements can be used to infer the energy distribution type of the beam electrons.

Solar Latitudinal Distribution of Solar Flares around the Sun and Their Association with Forbush Decreases during the Period of 1986 to 2003
Solar flare events of high importance were utilised to study solar latitudinal frequency distribution of the solar flares in northern and southern hemisphere for the solar cycle 22 to recent solar cycle 23. A statistical analysis was performed to obtain their relationship with sudden storm commencement (SSCs) and Forbush decrease events (Fd) of cosmic ray intensity. An 11-year cyclic variation ...
متن کاملThe role of nonthermal electrons in the optical continuum of stellar flares
The continuum emission of stellar flares in UV and visible bands can be enhanced by two or even three orders of magnitude relative to the quiescent level and is usually characterised by a blue colour. Thermal atmospheric models are difficult to reproduce all these spectral features. If the flaring process involves the acceleration of energetic electrons which then precipitate downwards to heat ...
متن کاملNonthermal Hard X-ray Emission and Iron Kα Emission from a Superflare on II Pegasi
We report on an X-ray flare detected on the active binary system II Pegasi with the Swift telescope. The event triggered the Burst Alert Telescope in the hard X-ray band on December 16, 2005 at 11:21:52 UT with a 10-200 keV luminosity of 2.2×10 erg s — a superflare, by comparison with energies of typical stellar flares on active binary systems. The trigger spectrum indicates a hot thermal plasm...
متن کاملDoppler speeds of the hydrogen Lyman lines in solar flares from EVE
Aims. The hydrogen Lyman lines provide important diagnostic information about the dynamics of the chromosphere, but there have been few systematic studies of their variability during flares. We investigate Doppler shifts in these lines in several flares, and use these to calculate plasma speeds. Methods. We use spectral data from the Multiple EUV Grating Spectrograph B (MEGS-B) detector of the ...
متن کاملDamping of MHD turbulence in Solar Flares
We describe the cascade of plasma waves or turbulence injected, presumably by reconnection, at scales comparable to the size of a solar flare loop, L ∼ 109 cm, to scales comparable to elementary particle gyro radii, and evaluate their damping at small scales by various mechanisms. We show that the classical viscous damping valid on scales larger than the collision mean free path (∼ 108 cm) is u...
